Windsurf is an AI-native editor built around Cascade, an agent that works across your whole repository rather than autocompleting the current line. It handles multi-file refactors, writes tests, chases down errors and can run background cloud sessions. Cognition AI acquired Windsurf in 2025, which brought the Devin autonomous agent team into the same company and explains the SWE-1.5 fast agent model that now appears on the pricing page. The interesting change is commercial, not technical. On 19 March 2026 Windsurf retired credits entirely and replaced them with daily and weekly quotas, and Pro moved from $15 to $20. That is a rare direction of travel — most of this category has gone the other way, toward variable credit burn that makes monthly spend unpredictable. You trade a hard ceiling on very heavy days for knowing exactly what you will pay, which for most teams is the better deal. The free tier carries roughly two to three days of active Cascade work, which is enough for an honest evaluation.
Pros
- Quotas instead of credits — you know your bill before the month starts
- Cascade reasons across the whole repository, not just the open file
- Cloud sessions run background work without tying up your machine
- Free tier is substantial enough to evaluate properly
- SWE-1.5 in-house fast model reduces dependence on third-party pricing
Cons
- Pro rose from $15 to $20 in the March 2026 restructure
- Daily and weekly quotas can throttle you mid-session on heavy days
- Max tier at $200/mo is a large step up for individuals who hit the ceiling
- Still a full IDE switch, which is a real cost if your team lives in something else
Use cases
- Multi-file refactors across an unfamiliar codebase
- Teams that need predictable per-seat AI tooling spend
- Writing test coverage for legacy code nobody wants to touch
- Background cloud sessions for long-running build and fix work
Pricing
freemium — from $20/mo (Pro). A free tier is available.
