Anthropic announced today the closing of a financing round at a $965 billion valuation, surpassing OpenAI in private-market pricing. The company has confidentially filed for an initial public offering.

The move comes as OpenAI prepares its own IPO filing, working with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, with a potential September 2026 target. OpenAI is currently valued at $730 billion in private markets.

Crunchbase's H1 2026 report shows global VC funding hit a record $510B — with OpenAI and Anthropic alone accounting for $217B (43%) of all startup capital raised in the first half of the year.

Investor sentiment is shifting, though. Business leaders are no longer willing to throw money without a clear picture of return on investment. That pressure is now reshaping how both companies price and package their offerings.
